Forcible Entry Size Up – Hidden Challenges

Forcible Entry for Residential vs. Commercial Structures Reading Forcible Entry Size Up – Hidden Challenges 3 minutes

The term “size up” is used in so many aspects of our job and utilizing these same techniques before forcing a door could save time, energy and possible frustration.

It only takes 3-4 seconds to see what possible obstacles you may face before forcing a door, which could greatly change how the rest of the job goes.

When Does Your Size up For Forcible Entry Begin?

It should start from the moment you receive the alarm (the type of building construction can dictate door/frame construction).

Also, you should familiarize yourself, from previous runs to buildings, the various types of doors and locks.

While on building inspections it’s up to you to know the building in your area, after all it’s your life on the line.

Once on scene and faced with gaining entry to the building, taking in what info is provided and what type of building could dictate what tools should be carried, possibly bringing additional tools such as a maul/halligan, hydra-ram and a saw

When at the door take a moment to see what is before you-which way does the door swing (inward or outward), is it steel or wood, manufactured or reinforced, are there basic locks showing (deadbolts), are there signs of aftermarket locks.

In addition, the showing of carriage bolts in a particular arrangement that may tip off what type of lock are showing and could be engaged (slide bolts, drop bars, fox locks).

All of these signs can be picked up by just taking 3-4 seconds to size up the door in front of you.

Our HOT Forcible Entry Class will cover these size-up techniques with real doors and provide plenty of hands on time with the irons and saw operation, for a real world experience.

Look forward to seeing you there

Remember there is a door out there with your name on it…are you prepared?
